Inspired by our visionary founders and their love for great values that build great people, great companies and great clients, we recently debuted a new series on our blog, featuring interviews with partners and VPs that delve into the meaning of our company values and why they’re special to the Squad. Anna Farnum, Account Manager in Boston, recently sat down with Mike Farber, Partner in Boston to discuss the Kindness value, what it means to him and how it helps determine LS’ new hires.

For the second edition in the series, I chatted with Hela Sheth, a VP in our New York office, about the acknowledgment value and why it makes LaunchSquad such a special place to work.

Why is acknowledgment an important value for LaunchSquad?

LaunchSquad is a special place to work for a variety of reasons, but our “acknowledgment value” underscores how we are a company focused, above all else, on our people. Every day, we do great work for great companies. That’s possible because we’re a team of great people that can learn together, laugh together and (often) even dance together. With such a team-centric approach, it’s crucial to be supportive of each other and celebrate specific accomplishments.

So we do just that. We acknowledge when our teammates kick ass and over-deliver on a project. We Slack Beyonce .gifs when someone pens an inspiring blog post for a client. We slow clap when someone takes a risk and tries something new and creative (whether it was successful or not). We say “thank you” when a team member cleans up after a company event.

Being Indian, I know the word “namaste” translates to “the light in me recognizes the light in you.” And that’s what acknowledging people at LaunchSquad is all about — we are lucky enough to witness the greatness in each other. So we call it out.

Does the “acknowledgment value” extend beyond our tradition of lunch conversations every Monday?

Definitely! Acknowledgment is a philosophy that permeates into everything we do. It’s about acknowledging each other for great effort and great results. What do I mean by that? It’s not just about booking a briefing with a top-tier reporter or securing a byline in Fortune; sure, those are fantastic, and they help keep our business running. But it’s also about the effort, creativity and tenacity involved in striving to achieve those results, even if they don’t turn out as we hoped.

As a mom to a two-year old, I live this reality every day. When my daughter has a hard time zipping her coat, I acknowledge her effort when she’s yanking on the zipper, trying her darndest to close that jacket — not just whether the jacket is successfully zipped when she’s finished.

It’s about the little things, too. When people step in to wash the dishes that have piled up in the sink, or change the trash bags, or volunteer to run a timely errand, that’s worth acknowledging. It may not be big and glamorous, but it’s important, because it shows our support for one another.

Do you remember the first time you received an acknowledgment at LS? What was your reaction?

I don’t recall the first time it happened, but even after being here four years, it still gets me every time, and instills a deep feeling of gratitude. I feel privileged, each and every day, to work for an organization that takes the time and effort to notice when people do big things and little things.

Giving acknowledgments evokes the same positive emotions. I love being able to look directly at someone and say “Hey you! When you did that thing? You were just moseying along, doing your job…but you know what? You did an incredible job. Thank you for all your hard work. Thank you for inspiring me in the process.”

To get even more momma bear for a minute, I love hearing all the acknowledgements float around the room. I feel so proud of you, Abigail, when someone calls you out for being exceptional. The same goes for all of our teammates.
