How did you get into PR?
My path to PR was somewhat unexpected. I interned at an environmental law firm, where I performed a mixture of policy research and media relations duties, and really fell in love with the firm’s media relations campaigns after witnessing their ability to shape public opinion around important issues like farm workers’ rights and water conservation. Also, during my job search, I looked for a position that would pair well with my growing interest in entrepreneurship and innovation, and tech PR seemed like it would a be perfect fit.
What’s your favorite work-related memory (client or team-related)?
It’s difficult to not consider Shaggy randomly crashing my PR meeting at iHeartRadio my favorite memory, but I think I’m going to have to go with Opower gifting the team Opower branded Chuck Taylors. We love working with Opower, so the whole team was really happy about the shoes. We said thank you by sending the client a chain of .GIFs to express our excitement. It’s so great to be able to have client relationships like that.
If you could give one piece of advice for someone looking to break into the PR industry, what would it be?
Know what makes you unique and own your personal style. Thousands of people with similar qualifications are applying for the same jobs and what is going to make you stand out the most is communicating what you can bring to the table that others can’t. Moreover, PR requires a good amount of collaboration and creativity, and I believe the best results are achieved when there’s a team of diverse individuals who push each other to see stories from a fresh angle or perspective.
