Isn't variety the spice of life? While children may be spending more time away from the classics, the proliferation of the Web also means they're turning to multiple resources. There is no longer one credible source of information, there are many; so many that children are being taught to decipher truth from fiction. While I read my fair share of classics growing up, I'm more likely now to read my Newsweek on the way to work than Pride & Prejudice. While at work, I add the New York Times, USA Today and the San Francisco Chronicle to the list; and when I get home at the end of that long work day? I tune into CNN. Multiple resources = a rounder view of the world... doesn't sound so bad to me.

Like OMG, it means certain DOOM for the English language, IMHO, soon nary a complete sentence will be uttered (err, written). Tongue fully in cheek.

Seriously, those stats are pretty crazy. But then so too are the % of recent college grads (I'd say maybe 2 in 5) who cannot seem to structure a thought, much less a written sentence. According to all the research we're furthest behind in math & science rather than verbal & written communication. What gives? Should I really be squirreling away the equivalent of a mortgage payment every month for the next 18 years to pay for my kids' college? Maybe I should just buy them lots of books... and print media, while it exists.

Guess what. The kids are (still) alright.

I think there has been a similar increase and evolution in our writing skills. The prevalence of email has transformed communication away from verbal (esp phone) and towards prose. I would say that we are writing today as much as we have since the television era began.
