Volunteer Day at the San Francisco Food Bank

Last week, LaunchSquad embarked on our second group volunteer effort of the year. This time, nine folks carpooled over to Potrero Hill where we spent the morning helping out at the San Francisco Food Bank.

After receiving a tour of the facilities, we were led outside where we donned plastic gloves and aprons to achieve the morning’s mission: sorting plums and tomatoes. One by one, we plucked the pieces of fruit from giant crates and loaded them into manageable cardboard boxes that could easily be distributed to people across the city. All the while, we talked and listened to this Estelle song over and over again on the radio.

By noon, the volunteers had de-crated and boxed about 10,600 lbs of plums (what the pros call “stone fruit”) — and we felt pretty good.

The Food Bank is housed in a beautiful new building where volunteers and staff collect donated food from growers, manufacturers and grocers, then help distribute the items to 500 local agencies, including child care and senior programs, community centers, shelters and soup kitchens across the city.

It’s hard to believe that nearly 150,000 people in San Francisco live with the threat of hunger, and it was rewarding and fun to spend time together at this center, where 31 million pounds of food are distributed every year to our fellow San Francisco residents.
