Let’s get real – many of us in the Boston office love bikes. All of us love kids. So when we heard that a local nonprofit, CYCLE Kids was having an event to build bikes for their spring session, we were SOLD!
CYCLE Kids is a Cambridge, MA-based nonprofit that strives to eliminate the childhood obesity issue by teaching kids healthy exercise (read: biking) and eating habits. The program gives kids in the metro Boston and New York City areas (many of whom have never been on bikes before) the opportunity to ride bikes in gym class and during after-school programs. Once the kids get on bikes, they’re hooked! It pairs the fun of bikes with nutrition classes, and kids often bring these good health habits home to their families. Talk about amazing!
The team was pretty stoked to learn how to build a bike, but what made it even cooler was that more than 50 of the kids in the program joined us to help put them together. (I will confess that the vast majority of these children were much better at building bikes than me. A few other team members that will remain nameless also put the handlebars on backwards. But Hallelujah, there were experts on hand to give us some assistance.)
Our mechanical prowess aside, we all had a blast and were super happy to help out an amazing organization like CYCLE Kids. And as a bonus, we brought a local NPR reporter along with us because, you know, we can’t seem to take a time out from doing PR!
